What's Winamp?
Winamp is a desktop media player for Windows that was very popular in the late 90s and early 00s. The core player was free (no subscriptions, no logins, no ads), reliable and efficient. It included then-novel features like shuffle capability, an equalizer, and mesmerizing audio visualizations.
Another part of its appeal was the ability to change the player's appearance with "skins" - custom designs that would overlay or replace the player's default interface. Creating skins was also pretty accessible, as no special software or technical knowledge was needed; anyone with so much as MS Paint and Notepad could make a new look and share it with the world. Skins where made for just about anything you can imagine: cats, web comics, sports teams, TV shows, anime, cars, alien-looking tech, Mr. Bean! You can find an absolute treasure trove of Classic skins at the Winamp Skin Museum.

If you're new - or returning - to Winamp, know that the brand has been bought out and its current owner's plan seems to be milking the namesake for all its nostalgic worth, while attaching it to a streaming service. If you're looking for the desktop player, avoid the offerings on winamp.com and get the last version that was released by its original dev team - 5.666 - or give WACUP a try instead.
